I love this series
Who is Birdy Ralston? In all four books of this series someone has just spotted Birdy Ralston and has to speak with him. It's usually someone on the periphery of the action with no relationship to the main characters or the crime. Waiting for this mention of Birdy Ralston is a bit like looking out for the Hitchcock appearance in all his films. Will we ever get to meet Mr. Ralston? I look forward to finding out.
Murder Most Haunting has my least favorite plot device for a mystery, and that is the haunted house, Halloween setting. Inevitably, as in this one, our super logical, balanced and reason-oriented sleuth (the very qualities that draw me to mysteries) suddenly develops all sorts of superstitions. I liked the old inn on the waterfront that you have to reach by water, but the characters were all stock "spooky" weird ones. Also, the author didn't differentiate them enough and made things a bit confusing by giving many of the characters names that started with E or R.
The mystery, once shorn of its superstition, which, I'm glad to say, happened fairly quickly, was interesting and spiced up with the story of a lost treasure. As usual with Mr. Colton's mysteries there is more going on than the obvious mystery. I like how he always seems to hold one trick back for the end.
I felt, despite the excellent setting, that this was the least strong story of this series, but was still enjoyable and well worth reading. I'm looking forward to the next book.
